Shopping and services
Faulty product or poor service
You can start this on your own. The steps below show how.
Consumer courts exist for exactly this, and you can file on your own. First you must give the seller a written notice and a chance to fix it. If they do not, you can take the complaint to the Consumer Court.
The law
Punjab Consumer Protection Act 2005 (other provinces and Islamabad have similar laws)
What to do
- 1
Write a short notice to the seller: what you bought, when, what is wrong, and what you want (repair, replacement or refund). Ask for a reply within 15 days.
- 2
Send it by registered post or courier, or by email, and keep the receipt as proof it was delivered.
- 3
If there is no fix after 15 days, file a complaint at the Consumer Court of your district. Do it quickly: the claim should be filed within 30 days of the problem arising.
- 4
Attach copies of the receipt, the notice and photos. The court can order a refund, replacement and compensation.
Keep these ready
- Receipt, invoice or warranty card
- Copy of your notice and proof it was sent
- Photos, chats or emails about the problem
- Copy of your CNIC
When to get a lawyer
Get a lawyer if the amount is large, a builder or housing scheme is involved, or the seller hires one.
- How long it takes
- Usually a few months in the Consumer Court
- Cost
- Low. Filing yourself costs little beyond copies and postage.
